Benzodiazepine Withdrawal and EFT- the Ideal Self-Management Tool

I’m an advanced Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner as well as being a recovered involuntary benzodiazepine (benzo) addict. I came off benzos in 1988 and qualified in EFT in 2006. That’s quite an unusual combination. I wish EFT had been around when I was coming off. But now I’m qualified, it puts me in the unique position of being able to offer EFT tapping routines to people who are withdrawing from a place of personal experience. And that’s really good news because if there’s one thing you need when coming off benzos – it’s the advice and support of others who’ve been through it – ’survivors’.

My own withdrawal in 1988

There wasn’t much information available when I came off, certainly nothing like there is now – internet sites, books and organisations. Professor Heather Ashton, world authority on benzo addiction and withdrawal, hadn’t set up her withdrawal clinic in Newcastle or written her manual (see below). I devised my own withdrawal programme, putting together a variety of complementary therapies and emotional /psychological support techniques. The result is ‘Safe Benzo Withdrawal’, my double CD set (see below) which contains advice and information based on my own experience. There is also a guided relaxation which I wrote specifically for benzo withdrawal. The data CD contains equivalence tables for switching to Diazepam (valium), a slower acting benzo.

Withdrawal Symptoms vary

Not everyone has a tough time coming off. We’re all different and there are many factors affecting the type of withdrawal i.e. dosage, type of medication, time you’ve been taking it etc. Rest assured. Many thousands of have now successfully come off and are living proof that it can be done. And now there’s a whole variety of withdrawal support resources available. (see below)

What is EFT?

EFT is a healing tool developed by an American, Gary Craig. It’s a kind of emotional acupuncture based on ancient Chinese healing. About five thousand years ago the Chinese discovered the human body had energy channels, called meridians, through which the body’s essential energy or chi flows. Managing the flow of chi forms the basis of the Eastern healing practices, such as acupressure and acupuncture, which are now widely used in the West.

How does it work?

When we experience anything which distresses us, be it physical pain, emotional distress, anxiety, anger, fear etc, there is a disruption in the body’s energy field and the EFT tapping is designed to remove this disruption and restore a sense of calmness and equilibrium. These energy disruptions can be held unresolved in the body, for many years, and often tapping is addressing an event from childhood that continues to affect one’s present life.

How do you do it?

You tap with your fingertips on various points on the energy meridians around the face and body whilst focusing your thoughts on a distressing symptom or feeling you’re having and repeating an affirmation or positive self-healing phrase. (full instructions, see link below)

Why is EFT perfect for benzo withdrawal?

• It’s easy to learn and very simple to use. Concentration span can be very limited when you’re withdrawing, so a technique that’s quick and easy is important

But perhaps no herbal remedy is quite as effective as Kava Kava. This is considered to be one of the strongest anti-anxiety remedies in the world.

A number of studies indicates that Kava Kava is highly effective in relieving the short-term symptoms of anxiety. It is also considered quite safe to ingest, making it one of the most popular herbs available on the market today.

An herbal remedy called PureCalm is being marketed as a safe way to deal with general nervousness and worry.

You may feel relaxed after taking only a few drops of this natural substance. Many people experience some fear and some anxiety at various times in their lives. Those with anxiety disorders are affected by fear to such a degree that they can’t function or live a normal live without the help of drugs. One of the most effective and prevalent drugs for anxiety disorder is diazepam.

Over 10% of Americans are on some type of anti-anxiety drug. The most popular one today is Xanax but diazepam is not very far behind.

Diazepam, or Valium as most people commonly know it, is an anti-anxiety or anti-panic agent. It works by effecting the release of the amino acid GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) into the brain. GABA acts to suppresses the nerve impulses leading to a feeling of relaxation.

Although a very useful and positive drug in the treatment of anxiety disorders – as well as insomnia, muscle spasms, and seizures – anyone taking it for anxiety should be aware of its negatives also.

Valium is habit forming and very addictive. Self medicating yourself with diazepam is a bad idea. because you can easily develop a dependency on it, especially if you take it in large doses over an extended period of time. Diazepam should only be taken under a doctor’s care and never take more than the prescribed dosage. Because of its addictive properties, you may suffer withdrawal symptoms when your doctor eventually weans you off of the drug.

Valium is hard on the kidneys and liver. If you have cirrhosis of the liver, any type of abnormal kidney function, or any other medical problems with your liver you should inform your doctor. Your dosage may have to be severely cut or dropped altogether. It may be taken with or without food and is metabolized by the liver and excreted mainly by the kidney. Dosages of Valium may need to be lowered in patients with abnormal kidney function.

Valium may also cause drowsiness and dizziness in some people. Until you are sure how your body will react to it, you should avoid driving, sports, or strenuous activities while taking it. One very striking effect of this drug is that it accumulates in the body. So even if you haven’t taken it for the while, you may still find yourself tired or sluggish with not apparent reason why. It very well may be the build up of the drug in your body.

Be aware that if you take antacids while taking Valium, the antacids will act to neutralize the drug, making it less effective. Thus you may find it not having the desired calming effect on your nervous system.

Even though diazepam is sometimes used to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms, this should only be done under a doctor’s care. Normally, alcohol should not be taken by anyone on diazepam. Mixing the two could possibly trigger an epileptic attack. Don’t take it if you are pregnant or are breast feeding your baby unless directed to by your doctor. There is strong evidence that it can harm the fetus. In the case of breast feeding, diazepam is retained in the breast milk, which means that it will be passed to the baby possibly causing addiction.

Diazepam is an extremely helpful drug and many suffering from anxiety would have a much tougher time without it. Just be careful when taking it.

Benzodiazepines can be given at least 30 to 60 minutes before a person suffering from anxiety is exposed to any stressful situations. Buspirones take at least 2 to 3 weeks before an improvement can be seen.

You should also be aware of the side effects that some of these anti anxiety drugs can have on you, especially if you suffer from certain medical conditions or suffer from allergic reactions to certain drugs, or are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or you’re a breast feeding mother. Causes

They are caused by number of biological and chemical changes that occur during the time of stress and anxiety.

Again, as stress plays a significant role in emergence of this panic attacks, tension becomes the main cause. For example, most anxious people often complain about the muscle pain and general fatigue. In this case due to mental stress, muscle gets tensed. Muscle tension can cause a panic feeling, a sensation of stiffing in few particular muscles. If there is a muscle tension in chest neck or in shoulders then there is a feeling of awkwardness and the sufferer may feel chest pain or neck stiffing. Pain in such muscular tissues can cause the blood vessels or neuron fibers contracted and restricted. Due to this sudden contraction some patients feel a typical numbness.

People suffering from some form of phobia have greater probability to suffer from these attacks whenever they are in a vicinity of their trigger of a reason of phobia. Often these attacks though very painful, are short lived and get erased once trigger moves out from their vicinity. Hyperventilation is also a major cause for these panic attacks.

Sometimes side effects of certain medication such as Ritalin result in triggering these attacks. This will last for brief period at the time of medication only.

Treatment
Although this is not a disease and is a kind of disorder triggered mostly by sudden stress, few drugs are of immense help at the onset of the attack. Such drugs are diazepam, alprazolam or lorazepam. In some cases, physicians seek help of antidepressants such as sertraline, paroxetine etc. they are effective in reduction of anxiety. The person suffering from insomnia can find their relief in mirtazapine.

As this is a stress related disorder psychotherapists and counselors may prove of great help. A psychotherapist can identify the cause of anxiety and can offer relaxing techniques to decrease it gradually. Deep and slow breathing is one of the best means of relaxation.

Diazepam comes in four forms; oral solution of 5mg/5ml, tablets form with dosages of 2mg, 5mg and10mg, with 10mg being the strongest dosage, and are available in the form of a blue round tablet with the name of Roche embossed on it. Then, in the form of capsules of 15mg and finally an injection with a dosage of 5mg/ml. Depending on the age of the patient and ailment of the patient, a required dosage is prescribed. For the short term relief of anxiety disorders, from the age of 18 to 60 a dosage of 10 mg may be administered 2 to 4 times daily. For Acute alcohol withdrawal syndromes, a 10mg is prescribed for the first 24 hours to relief the agitation and nervousness of the patient. Later a 5mg dosage is given 3 to 4 times daily. For muscle spasms too, depending on the age factor a dosage of 2mg to 10 mg is given. For epileptics however, an injection is given instead of a tablet. An 18 to 60 year old person can be given a dosage of IV 5-10mg at 2-5mg/ min and could be repeated in 2 to 4 hours.

The drug should not be given to patients above the age of 65 and children under the age of 6 months. Pregnant women and debilitated patients are also strictly advised not to have this medication. If taken with any other medications or substance, Diazepam could have severe reactions; therefore precaution must be obtained when using this drug. It is to be noted that before administering diazepam to someone, the medical conditions of the patient is to be thoroughly understood, because not every patient can be given this drug. It is just meant for the relaxation of anxiety and other nerve related issues, and not meant for severely psychotic or depressed patients, as it could trigger excitement or unwanted emotional disorders in the patient. Thus, considering the pros and cons of diazepam, it is advised that you consult your doctor first and do not try to attempt using the drug without a medical consultation; also avoid recommending the medicine to anyone. Such medications become dangerous, if not administered properly.

It is likely that the consumption of alcohol can cause increased dizziness and drowsiness, and the risks of having a seizure are greatly increased.

Diazepam is to be taken as directed by your doctor. It is important to take the correct dose, if a patient misses a does it is recommended that they skip that dose and take the next dose as usual. If you forget to take it, do not take it again if it is real close to the next time you are scheduled to take it. Skipping one does is not critical. Taking two doses too close together can cause a lot of problems.
